Soon thereafter, these sermons ignited a political and religious controversy inside the Faculty of Theology in Paris, which was resolved to condemn the work during an extraordinary assembly, gathered on the 1st October 1611.

This article analyses the reasons that might explain the unanimous censorship and condemnation of the Gallican Church concerning this collection of sermons, which constitutes an unquestionable example of the sacred eloquence in the Spanish Golden Age. It evaluates, at the same time, how the doctrine of Spanish sermons, having explored the many possibilities offered by the post-tridentin scholastic, remains incomprehensible for Gallican theologists. Finally, it considers the relevance of the sermon as a historical document.

Keywords. Sermons, Spain, Jesuits, 17th century, Sorbonne, censorship.

Télécharger l'article complet (pdf, 305 Kb)

Tue, 06 Feb 2018 13:05:00 +0100 admin
