Roland BEHAR, « The "amicable correction". Forms of poetic controversy in the early days of vernacular poetic theory in the 16th century ».

Abstract. This paper focuses on three almost contemporary literary polemics, which occurred in France, Italy and Spain, near the middle of the 16th century. Their subject was in all three cases the definition of lyric poetry and its role in the defence and illustration of the vernacular language. Thanks to their programmatic postures, J. Du Bellay, A. Caro and F. de Herrera thoroughly modified the literary landscapes of their time. The polemics they started also share characteristics that are typical of the evolution the poets’ self-representations undergo. Controversy seems to become at this stage a genre per se, which combines the serious form of the scholastic disputatio with the more literary satire. The rise of this genre marks an important moment in the development of the republic of vernacular literature. At its origins, one finds the poetic subject’s claim to the poetic domain: this unseen theoretical prerogative shocks and causes the controversy, which allows each of the opponents to find the literary staging of its role, through the use of the satiric fiction – Quintil, Maître Pasquin, Bachiller, Prete Jacopín.

Keywords. literary controversy, satire, dispute, literary field, Pasquin, Joachim Du Bellay, Annibal Caro, Fernando de Herrera.

Télécharger l'article complet (pdf, 1023 Kb)
Tue, 06 Feb 2018 12:56:00 +0100 admin
