Jean-Luc MARTINET, “The time has come for the movie”: the influence of the moving image on History writing in The Wretched of the Earth by Henry Poulaille.

Abstract. Henry Poulaille was one of the founders of what came to be called Proletarian Literature in the nineteen thirties. It can be defined as literature written by proletarians, employees, or farmhands whose aim is to give a faithful reproduction of their own experience. In his novel entitled The Wretched of the Earth (1935) Poulaille attempts to describe how the working class endured the revolts and their destitute life in the years 1906 to 1910. To make this depiction as accurate as possible, he uses writing styles that are borrowed from the cinema and the phonograph. Through a process of montage work that draws on Eisenstein’s cinema in Russia or Chaplin’s films, the novel combines fiction and documentary material to capture the experience of destitution as vividly as possible. History is thus told by the very people who make it, thanks to literary devices that aim at relating it with utmost immediacy - phonographically.

Abstract. The “Mostra Internacional de Films de Dones [women] de Barcelona” surely deserves a prominent place within the field of Festival Studies, a field that has greatly helped to the scientific recognition of the festival phenomenon. During its 25 years of existence the Mostra has contributed both to the history of cinema in Spain and to the defense of democratic values. This festival was born within a context of audiovisual censorship by the initiative of an anti-Franquist co-operative whose aim was to educate the public’s gaze into a “situated knowledges” perspective. The strong feminist posture of the organizers has made of this festival a political event which has build and transform its own audience. This is why the “Mostra” is more than a festival, and may be better defined as an empowerment school.

Abstract. This article presents a brief history of the controversy about the role of the State in popular cinema and audiovisual mass industry in Brazil, aiming to illuminate the origins of their antagonism (in the 50’s and 60’s). It also contrast this antagonism with the audiovisual industry policies carried out by the Government of the Workers’ Party (Partido dos Trabalhadores) between 2003 and 2006. Our analysis is based on the declarations of producers, directors, and actors published in the Carta de Tiradentes, during the cinema festivals of Tiradentes (a city located in Minas Gerais). Our examples are Bahia’s audiovisual productions which are typically more open to popular identity discourse but without neglecting the requirements of contemporary cinema market.

Carlos VALLINA, Lía GÓMEZ, "The silence of childhood in Albertina Carri's cinema".

Abstract

The article aims at putting up for discussion Albertina Carri’s films. Albertina Carri is a film-maker whose parents were kidnapped and disappeared during the last civic-military dictatorship (1976).

The concept of memory in the aesthetic construction of films is the main axis of this study, which begins with the critical narrative analysis of her short Restos (2010) and her film Los Rubios (2003).

The main hypothesis is that cinema language is the representation of the silent voice of children who have been victims of state terrorism, and whose present and past is discussed in their own narrative styles.
