Squires, Knights. Pilgrims. Spies. Fifteenth-century travellers under the authority of the powerful Dukes of Burgundy adopted fluid and nebulous roles and identities. Under the influence of contemporary travel narratives, the relationships of passage in fiction depict itineraries that conform to the reality of the routes traditionally used by pilgrims and merchants; they are thus enriched with precise geographical indications and take up the familiar names of travellers (especially the high places of devotion in the Holy Land). By depicting the exemplary peregrinations of legendary princes, fiction literature thus revives interest in the reconquest of the Holy Land and promotes among the Burgundian warrior elite the missions of the Christian knight, called since 1454 and the famous Pheasant Banquet to take up the cross to defend threatened Christendom.

Keywords: Othovyen, prose setting, Court of Burgundy, XVth Century, narrative literature, travel narrative, pilgrimage, moyen français.

Télécharger l'article complet (pdf, 339 Kb)
Sat, 19 Dec 2020 12:13:00 +0100 marianne.bloch-robin
