Abstract. The Franciscan Odoric of Pordenone leaves for the Far East after 1318. Having embarked at Hormuz, he arrives at Thana, on the island of Salsette, where, in 1321, four missionaries had been killed by the Muslim authorities. Between 1324 and 1326 he arrives in Peking. After staying three years at the court of the Khan, he sets out on his return journey. The indications concerning this part of the itinerary are not very precise. The last information the author gives us concerns the valley of the flumen deliciarum. Odoric’s work is a truthful account of a real journey, but also an apology for the Franciscan missions in the East. The traveller devotes a large section of his report to the story of the execution of his confreres at Thana. He himself becomes a direct witness to their holiness during the transport of the relics across the Indian Ocean to China. The section in which Odoric overcomes the obstacle of dead calm has been heavily reworked in the family of Latin manuscripts that forms the model for the French translation of Jean le Long (1351). The celebration of the Franciscan order culminates in the episode that relates the crossing of the valley of the River of Delights. It is an obscure passage that has resisted all attempts at literal interpretation. The only possible reading is the one that assigns it an allegorical value.

Julia ROUMIER,“Space of travel, places of faith. The passage through the travel and pilgrimages narratives in 15th-16th century Spain”

Abstract. The multiplication of Hispanic relations of pilgrimages in the sixteenth century shows that the discovery of the West Indies did not make forget the Holy Land. On the contrary, it seems to renew its power of fascination. This territory functions like a relic, allowing a spiritual path to bring a new man. But does the pilgrim go through without travelling and meeting the worldly realities? Without interaction with the local populations, does the pilgrim cross the secular space, being magnetized towards the sacred goal, without any excitation of his senses? From the fifteenth century, the authors emancipate themselves from a model that has become heavy and, on a traditional canvas, graft a heterogeneous material wish enriches their world view. So much so that libido videndi and Christian fervour both find their place in a growing geographical literature. Curiosity and devotion can be articulated in the experience of the passage. We will compare here the treatment of space and passage in several Castilian travel narratives of the late Middle Ages to enlighten our reading of the two stories of pilgrimages that inaugurate the entry into the sixteenth century. In 1507, brother Antonio de Lisboa writes his Viajes escritos para el conocimiento de la comunidad del monasterio de Guadalupe. Similarly, in 1512, Brother Diego de Mérida sends from Crete, the description of his trip. In these two testimonial texts allowing access to these distant territories to their readers, one can read the pleasure of the trip and the praise of the detour. There is even the appreciation of radically different men. What would then be the transgressive dimension contained in this passage, which brings us together with otherness? Brought to surpass himself, the pilgrim emerges renewed from the experience of elsewhere. The passage to the Holy Land thus constitutes a surpassing of oneself, a personal assumption where the personality of an author is affirmed.
