Abstract. This workquestions the artist’s relationship with the violence and the political events of his time. It intends to break from the widespread image of an artist who criticizes human savagery with an objective eye, by analysing the ambivalence and the ambiguity that are to be found throughout his work. Through a brief comparative study of Goya’s series engraved in the 1810’s, La Tauromaquia and Los Desastres de la Guerra, a different image of the artist emerges: one of a painter caught in unsolvable contradictions, divided between fascination, resignation and outrage in front of human violence.

Abstract. The protection of animals has been a constant aspect of Francisco de Goya’s life and artistic path. The canvas and tapestry cartoons of his early period frequently represent domestic and wild animals in all their splendour: from the pet – side by side with its master –, to the symbol of various virtues, the animal has occupied an unusual space within the pictorial tradition since the beginning of the Aragonese painter’s artistic career. Later, the prints of the Caprichos, the Desastres and the Tauromaquia still give this importance to the animal kingdom. Rather: not only do the domestic animal or the beast not lose their influence, they also gradually impose themselves into the artist’s imagination. Paradoxically, through the animal, the First Goya claims humankind is in harmony with nature, but he then gives way to the “other Goya”, who uses animality to denounce human cruelty. Cats and dogs, horses and bulls, donkeys, monkeys, lions and birds, fantastic beasts and monsters, contribute to achieve this goal. It is evidenced in works such as the enigmatic portrait of Don Manuel de Osorio de Zúñiga niño, La riña de gatos, Carlos III cazador or, already in his second period, “El Sueño de la Razón produce monstruos” and “Donde va mamá”, until the climax of the Perro semihundido. The protection of animals against a violent environment is a constant aspect of the Aragonese painter’s work, which masterfully gets along with the personal circumstances of the artist’s life and his time.

Abstract. The purpose of this study is to revisit Goya’s Desastres de la guerra by focusing on two aspects which seem contradictory prima facie, but are actually sustaining one another in the artist’s work: the art of phantasmagoria on the one hand, and a transgressive aesthetic modernity – or a new “pre-photographic” view – on the other. It examines the plastic processes used by Goya as well as the prominence he gives to the tortured, violated, mutilated body, which has been subjected to every possible form of barbarism. Lastly, it is interested in the elements which convey a universal dimension to Goya’s engravings, with a special emphasis on the artistic and religious sources nourishing his work.

Frédéric PROT, “The Desastres de la guerra in Light of the Law of War and European International Law (18th and 19th centuries): War Crime and Tragedy of Culture”.

Abstract. In 1808, the life and death struggle against Napoleon’s occupation troops first came under the category of “just war”, in the eyes of Goya. But this notion theorized by Saint Augustine would then inexorably become muddled, particularly because of the paradoxical injunction it contained. The second and third programmatic prints of the Desastres (“Con razón o sin ella” / “Lo mismo”) for instance, show its polarization between legitimacy – from the point of view of political reason and natural law –, and illegality – from the point of view of humanitarian moral and natural reason. Here Goya duly records how the mind is torn between two irreconcilable systems of necessity. Starting in the second half of the 18th century, a trend of European law began to distinguish international law from its former jusnaturalist and moral postulates in order to give it, from this moment on, the form of treatises and war conventions. This positivist pragmatism will not only outshine the law of war, which had been until then the matrix of jus gentium, along with it, it will also outshine the philosophy of natural law which underlay it. The 18th century can thus be described as a century of transition between two ages and two states of international law. The Desastres de la guerra equally contribute to this dynamic by tolling the death knell of the great universal systems: rationalist natural law, humanitarian moral and religion. Here, Goya does not only act as a memorialist: he also contributes, as an artist, to the modern definition of “war crime” and “crime against humanity”, two categories which had not yet been theorized at the time. The article revolves around three lines: 1°) From just war to total war; 2°) War crime in relation to natural law, jus gentium and international law; 3°) War crime and tragedy of culture.

Abstract. The violence of Goya’s Desastres de la guerra is a result not only of the immediate horror of what is represented, war, but also of a deep rupture with the neoclassical canons of its time. Paying particular attention to aquatints n° 37 and n° 39, this paper recalls how Goya was trained in the school of imitation of the Ancients, of the Belvedere Torso and of the Laocoön, and how this lesson is evident even in his late works, though with constant transgressions of the classical representation of the body. This transgression is not only visual, it is also intellectual: with the Desastres, Goya echoes the considerations of Lessing’s Laocoon (1766) on ugliness and the fruitful moment (fruchtbarer Moment), and creates an art that lies radically beyond what the theory of the fine arts considered as art.

Key Words.

Abstract. Francisco de Goya is not only the painter of the court, of portraits or of the royal family, nor is he only theengraver of the Caprichos and the Desastres. Indeed, he introduces the universal discourse of horror into history of Art. But his influence is broader than this field, and reaches the one of literature. As a man close to the intellectual elite of his time, Goya is recognized in literature as the inventor of the universal language of horror. His observation of the horrors of war and his aesthetics greatly influenced Spanish poets, chroniclers, playwrights and novelists from the end of the 18th century to the present day. This article presents some of those goyesque traces – more precisely those of the Desastres – as they may be discovered in various texts.

Eva SEBBAGH, “The Satire in Painting. The Keys of Satirical Image from the Flemish Primitives to Goya”.

Abstract. Usually seen as a synonym for “mockery”, or more vaguely related to the comical genre, satire is rarely apprehended as a mode of enunciation in its own right. However, the particular complexity it discloses holds the attention, and leads one to consider how far from being obvious its implementation in the pictorial field is. This study thus aims to open new ways of reflecting on the idea of “figurative satire” in order to better pinpoint the distinctive features of a type of representations whose identification is more often led by merely intuitive considerations. Besides, finding basic elements which attest the existence of the category of “satirical pictures” will allow for a more precise approach of Goya’s case. It will be an opportunity to start answering a question which has never been addressed by the vast bibliography dedicated to the artist: both in view of the pictorial tradition which precedes him and beyond the probably too “automatic” use we tend to make of the adjective, to what extent is it suitable to consider the Aragonese’s work as “satirical”?

Abstract. This article studies how the captions contribute to express denunciation in Goya’s prints and drawings. It looks at two main aspects. Firstly, it focuses on the diversity of modes of enunciation Goya uses in his captions, from impersonal and impartial discourse to compassionate or invective address, and to monologue. Secondly, it analyzes the vocabulary and the syntax of denunciation: here the study stresses its richness and subtlety while showing Goya’s frequent appeals to the spectator-reader’s complicity, and his will to suggest the inability to speak about horror.
