Abstract. This article proposes a different approach to the work of Mexican writer Jorge Ibargüengoitia. Known mainly for his novels, such as Los relámpagos de agosto, for his short story’s compilation La ley de Herodes, and, to a lesser extent, his plays, Ibargüengoitia is also the author of more than 600 press articles. They appeared in several Mexican periodicals, a large part of which was published in book form after his death. In this comparatively less studied corpus, which I propose to call brief argumentative work, Ibargüengoitia presents his point of view on the Mexican reality of his time. Based on a limited selection of articles taken from Instrucciones para vivir en México, specifically those in which the author discusses the world of politics, my aim in these pages focuses on two aspects. The first will state that this part of Ibargüengoitia’s work is characterized, as his narrative work, by an ironic ethos, in the sense that Hutcheon and Schoentjes give to irony, that is, a pejorative statement of the distance between ideal and reality. The second aspect explores how this irony acquires a normative, satirical tone in the articles, unlike the novels and short stories, which tend more towards a humorous tone.

Abstract. We analyze the various forms of humor in the political communiqués written by Subcommander Marcos' (1994-) and in the brief novel Desvanecidos difuntos (1991), which his friend Paco Ignacio Taibo II published a few years before the Zapatista uprising. The two writers resort to absurd and ironic humor as well as a light form of joking to criticize the Mexican state and point out its responsibility for the violence that has devastated the country for decades. On the other hand, another Mexican writer, Juan Pablo Villalobos, in his novel No voy a pedirle a nadie que me crea (2016) directs his humorous arrows not only against the official institutions that represent the State but also against characters who embody Civil Society. In this way he points out the co-responsibility of the latter in the sad conjuncture of the present.
