Abstract. This article describes the enormous political consequences of the 1755 earthquake. It originated an unprecedented political centralization, conducted in the years after 1755 by the faction of the secretary of state Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo (the future Count of Oeiras and Marquis de Pombal). While most aspects of this centralization are well known, the article shows the sequence of political events that the earthquake made possible: exceptional measures originated conspiracies against Carvalho e Melo and an attempt to assassinate the King, which was followed by a brutal repression against the nobility and the Society of Jesus. The author shows concretely how the physical destruction of the places of power (the royal palace, courts and councils) allowed for new forms of political action, at the expenses of traditional forms of decision-making and administration of justice.

Abstract. The representations of the Jesuit Jerónimo de Florencia have always been an important stake in the construction of the Company’s image from the 17th century until today. The Carta de defunción written in 1633 by the Jesuit Father Juan de Montalvo immediately after the death of the royal preacher shows how the posthumous discourse —a truly hagiographical project —rehabilitates this controversial figure, who exerted more and more political influence in the court until the death of Philip III. The eulogy goes beyond the man’s excellent qualities to emphasize his selflessness as well as his utter obedience to the order and to his evangelical mission. Indirectly there emerges a defence at two levels, both individual and collective, at a time when Anti-Jesuitism was spreading in Spain. Conversely, three centuries later the Jesuit Antonio Astrain made a radically different choice in his Historia de la Compañía as he denounced Father Florencia’s vices to better reaffirm the Company’s moral and spiritual values. The varying images of Jerónimo de Florencia, which go from praise to vituperation, show how malleable the Company’s defending arguments are but also how necessary they are in Spain, a country where support for the Company is uneven.

This article analyses the reasons that might explain the unanimous censorship and condemnation of the Gallican Church concerning this collection of sermons, which constitutes an unquestionable example of the sacred eloquence in the Spanish Golden Age. It evaluates, at the same time, how the doctrine of Spanish sermons, having explored the many possibilities offered by the post-tridentin scholastic, remains incomprehensible for Gallican theologists. Finally, it considers the relevance of the sermon as a historical document.
