Jean-Luc MARTINET, “The time has come for the movie”: the influence of the moving image on History writing in The Wretched of the Earth by Henry Poulaille.

Abstract. Henry Poulaille was one of the founders of what came to be called Proletarian Literature in the nineteen thirties. It can be defined as literature written by proletarians, employees, or farmhands whose aim is to give a faithful reproduction of their own experience. In his novel entitled The Wretched of the Earth (1935) Poulaille attempts to describe how the working class endured the revolts and their destitute life in the years 1906 to 1910. To make this depiction as accurate as possible, he uses writing styles that are borrowed from the cinema and the phonograph. Through a process of montage work that draws on Eisenstein’s cinema in Russia or Chaplin’s films, the novel combines fiction and documentary material to capture the experience of destitution as vividly as possible. History is thus told by the very people who make it, thanks to literary devices that aim at relating it with utmost immediacy - phonographically.
