Jacques TERRASA, “Hair and Hairiness in the Work of Manuel Álvarez Bravo”.

Abstract. Clearly visible pubic hair in his nude photographs, from Good Reputation Sleeping (1938-39) to Temptations in the House of Antonio (1970); luxuriant hair, braided in the portraits of Frida Kahlo or flowing free in the Portrait of the Eternal (1935): these are the constants of the female body as seen by the Mexican photographer Manuel Álvarez Bravo. They flauntingly hide the body, adding to its worrisome sensuality. Without being exhaustive, this article demonstrates how prominent hair growth — the very opposite of the smooth perfection of the contemporary body— still fascinates and disturbs us. For don’t raised hairs reveal our dark objects of desire?

Abstract. This article provides a comparative analysis of two different but complementary photographic universes: that of Manuel Álvarez Bravo (1902-2002) and thatof Bertrand Hugues (born in 1967). Attempting to approach them meanstaking stock of essential questions fortheset wo artists:that of the photographical representation of nature and of its particular exigencies; that of the capacity of the medium used to translate the dreamlike side of things, to suggest the presence of an underlying imaginary or mythological universe; that of the temporality specific to photography, endlessly wavering between the intensity of life and the presence of death. The results of this quest might seem rather precarious:an isolated tree in the middle of a plain, intertwining leaves that bring a butterfly’s wings to mind; but might this fragility not be proof of an aspiration touniversality?

Juan Carlos BAEZA SOTO, « Écorcher l’absolu.

Juan Carlos BAEZA SOTO, «Laying Bare the Limitless: Body and the Identity of the Soul in Manuel Álvarez Bravo’s Nudes».

Abstract. Light seems to strive for human perfection in the nude bodies offered by Manuel Álvarez Bravo in BlackMirror (1947), ForbiddenFruit (1976), Xipetotec (1979),or Siesta in the Grass (1979).The shadow’s triumphant light is in reality, inan Aztec perspective on the world, always dependent on struggle and accident. It is for this reason that this Mexican photographer’s nudes conjure up accidents and absence. The singular framing of Manuel Álvarez Bravo’s nudes gives light an identity that relies on contrast: without coming into contact with the body, light would be without substance. In this way, Manuel Álvarez Bravo’s nudes open up “a discernible way into ontology” (François Jullien); to the eyes of knowledge, they offer up a body in thirst of respite.

Abstract. This article reviews the circumstances behind the creation of Manuel Álvarez Bravo’s best-known photograph, Good Reputation Sleeping (1938-39). This image was initially commissioned by André Breton for the cover of the catalogue of the International Surrealist Exhibition that was to take place in Mexico City in 1940; it ended upbeing censored by the gallery that published the catalogue. The article analyses the presence of bandages on the body of Alicia —the model— and of the spiny fruits — abrojos— near her groin. The surrealist nature of the work is studied, along with its possible relationship to Douanier Rousseau’s The Sleeping Gypsy (1887), to Edward Weston’s photograph Tina on the Azotea, captured in Mexico City in 1924, or to other images by Álvarez Bravohimself.
