Sofía M. However, contact with reality very often provoked very violent shocks. This was the case, for example, during the expedition to the Río de la Plata, which led to the first foundation of the city of Buenos Aires. The calamities that devastated it and decimated the fleet are recounted by one of the survivors, Luis de Miranda, in his Romance elegíaco. In this article, this poem is analyzed and related to contemporary and later texts that allow us to circulate through a whole network of hypertexts. This network gave rise to a complex discourse on the space associated with the Río de la Plata, a discourse that is still in force today, with its research, conflicts, frustrations, utopian projections and questionings.

Key words: Luis de Miranda, Romance elegíaco, Conquest of the Río de la Plata, First foundation of Buenos Aires, The “caudillo” as Latin American leader, Isabel de Guevara, Ulrico Schmidl, Martín del Barco Centenera, Manuel Mujica Lainez, Los que comimos a Solís.

Sofía M.
