Under the influence of contemporary travel narratives, the relationships of passage in fiction depict itineraries that conform to the reality of the routes traditionally used by pilgrims and merchants; they are thus enriched with precise geographical indications and take up the familiar names of travellers (especially the high places of devotion in the Holy Land). By depicting the exemplary peregrinations of legendary princes, fiction literature thus revives interest in the reconquest of the Holy Land and promotes among the Burgundian warrior elite the missions of the Christian knight, called since 1454 and the famous Pheasant Banquet to take up the cross to defend threatened Christendom.

Keywords: Othovyen, prose setting, Court of Burgundy, XVth Century, narrative literature, travel narrative, pilgrimage, moyen français.

Télécharger l'article complet (pdf, 339 Kb)
Sat, 19 Dec 2020 12:13:00 +0100 marianne.bloch-robin 08.

Sonia PORZI, “«Io non sono per fare ora altro passaggio, però che il passaggio è qui»: from the project of the Holy Passage to Jerusalem to the passage to the heavenly Jerusalem in Catherine of Siena”

Abstract. In the letters of Catherine of Siena, the notion of passage goes far beyond the Santo Passaggio in the medieval sense of passagium ultramarinum. This pontifical project of an armed maritime expedition to the Holy Land, then against the Turks, first resonates with her own desire for a pilgrimage to the Holy Sepulchre, while at the same time being part of her vast programme of Universal Salvation. But when the great Western Schism broke out in 1378, the crux cismarina was imposed: a crusade to be led between Christians at the gates of Rome besieged by the troops of the schismatics, the new heretics. This evolution pushes Catherine to redefine the notion of «passage»: from its literal meaning of maritime crossing, it becomes a passage without a journey, figuratively speaking. At the same time, through her meditations, this notion was enriched by a penitential moral sense of fighting against sins and a spiritual sense of ultimate transit towards the heavenly Jerusalem, both an individual and collective destination for Christians.

Keywords: Catherine of Siena, crusade, passage, great Western Schism, pilgrimage, Jerusalem, threshold, bridge, nave, exegesis.

Télécharger l'article complet (pdf, 469 Kb)
Sat, 19 Dec 2020 12:07:00 +0100 marianne.bloch-robin 07.Passage et voyage dans la Vie de saint Louis de Joinville https://atlante.univ-lille.fr/07-passage-et-voyage-dans-la-emvie-de-saint-louis-em-de-joinville.html https://atlante.univ-lille.fr/07-passage-et-voyage-dans-la-emvie-de-saint-louis-em-de-joinville.html
Marie-Madeleine Castellani
Université de Lille
ALITHILA – ULR 1061
p.150-163.
