Festival, Cine, Feminismo, Público, Saberes situados, Empoderamiento.

Abstract. The “Mostra Internacional de Films de Dones [women] de Barcelona” surely deserves a prominent place within the field of Festival Studies, a field that has greatly helped to the scientific recognition of the festival phenomenon. During its 25 years of existence the Mostra has contributed both to the history of cinema in Spain and to the defense of democratic values. This festival was born within a context of audiovisual censorship by the initiative of an anti-Franquist co-operative whose aim was to educate the public’s gaze into a “situated knowledges” perspective. The strong feminist posture of the organizers has made of this festival a political event which has build and transform its own audience. This is why the “Mostra” is more than a festival, and may be better defined as an empowerment school.

Keywords. Festival, Cinema, Feminism, Audience, Situated knowledges, empowerment.

Abstract. The film Cuando quiero llorar no lloro, directed by Mauricio Walertein, was released in April 1973. Its premier became an inflexion point in the Venezuelan film history, starting what was called the boom of the Venezuelan cinema. The film’s public success, along with the income from the increased oil prices, led the Venezuelan State to implement public policies to support national cinematography. It was also the inauguration of social drama as the favourite “genre” of the local film spectators. Thus, in this article we will analyse the films production and their public reception, as well as the influence of the national context, from the boom’s starters until 2016. We have identified three clearly different periods of production and reception: the boom (1973-1988), the crisis (1989-2004) and the renaissance? (2005-2016).
