Abstract. Without a doubt, one of the characteristics of the Desastres de la Guerra is the important part of it which belongs to imagination, in the form of allegory and animalization.
The great abstract ideals of Nation, Justice and Truth appear in five plates from the third part, which can be compared to other works (drawings 117 and 118 of Album C, the Alegoría de la aprobación de la Constitución de Cádiz de 1812) realized during the euphoric period that goes from the enactment of the Constitution to the end of the war.
The dialectic between Reason and Unreason, which is established by the caption of plate no. 2, paves the way for a representation of animalized human beings, in the form of male and female fighters turned into wild beasts.
Following the explicitly quoted model of Giambattista Casti’s Talking animals, plates no. 71 to 78 function as a zoocracy, which is an aggressive satire of Ferdinand VII’s court. Here, animals – the fox, the cat, the vulture, vampires, birds of prey – represent the king and his relatives.
Finally, it is through these allegories that the ideological and ethical founding principles of Goya’s political commitment are most clearly expressed.

Keywords. Nation, Justice, Truth, Reason vs unreason, political Satire.
