Abstract. Many Western travellers had the opportunity to travel the Indian Ocean in the Middle Ages, either to the Far East or back. Analysis of their perception of this maritime space shows that it was already a well-defined entity for them. Moreover, despite the length of its crossing and the many stopovers they were able to make, this ocean can be seen as a passage. This function of passage can take several forms: a geographical passage, between East and West, or towards the southern hemisphere; a “cultural” passage towards countries with strange customs and religions; and finally a temporal and mystical passage, allowing us to relive biblical times.
