<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Résumé. </strong>Cet article analyse la façon dont les chefs de file du romantisme portugais ont placé la littérature et l’histoire au service d’une certaine vision de la nation. Plus concrètement, nous observerons comment Herculano et Garrett ont utilisé le projet romantique (de redécouverte des origines et des traditions de chaque peuple) pour remplacer les grandes mythologies de l’Ancien Régime par un nouvel imaginaire national de type libéral et populaire. En effet, dans le cas portugais, la réhabilitation du Moyen-Âge, idéalisé en tant que période de décentralisation du pouvoir et de vitalité culturelle, contribua fortement à légitimer le principe de représentation du système constitutionnel issu de la révolution de 1820, en démontrant sa cohérence historique. Une étude plus exhaustive de la littérature produite au Portugal à cette époque permet cependant de constater que des conceptions de nation ouvertement conservatrices ont continué d’être véhiculées par d’autres écrivains. Enfin, il convient de rappeler que l’organisation du champ littéraire portugais de la première moitié du XIX<sup>e</sup> siècle passe aussi par le développement progressif d’une littérature de pur divertissement très appréciée d’un public-lecteur bourgeois de plus en plus nombreux.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Resumo. </strong>O presente artigo analisa o modo como os chefes de fila do romantismo português colocaram a literatura e a história ao serviço de uma certa visão da nação. Mais concretamente, observaremos como Herculano e Garrett se serviram do projeto romântico (de redescoberta das origens e tradições de cada povo) para substituírem as grandes mitologias do Antigo Regime por um novo imaginário nacional de tipo liberal, popular. Com efeito, no caso português, a reabilitação da Idade Média, idealizada enquanto período de descentralização do poder e de vitalidade cultural, contribuiu fortemente para legitimar o princípio de representação do sistema constitucional saído da revolução de 1820, demonstrando a sua coerência histórica. Um estudo mais exaustivo da literatura produzida em Portugal durante esse período permite no entanto constatar que outras conceções de nação, abertamente conservadoras, continuaram a ser veiculadas por outros escritores. Por fim, deve-se salientar que a estruturação do campo literário português da primeira metade do século XIX passa também pelo desenvolvimento progressivo de uma literatura de mero divertimento muito apreciada por um público-leitor burguês cada vez mais numeroso.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Luís SOBREIRA, </strong><strong>The aesthetic project of the early Portuguese romantics and their ideological vision of History</strong></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Abstract. </strong>This article analyzes the way portuguese romanticism leaders have placed literature and history at the service of a certain nation vision. More precisely, we will observe the way Herculano and Garrett used the romantic project (which consisted in rediscovering the origins and traditions of each people) to replace the Old Regime great mythologies with a new national imaginary, of a liberal and popular type. In fact, in the portuguese case, the Middle Ages rehabilitation, idealized as a period of decentralized power and flourishing culture, strongly contributed to legitimize the representative principle of the constitutional system that resulted from the 1820 revolution, by demonstrating its historical coherence. A more exhaustive study of the literature produced in Portugal at that time reveals, however, that some nation conceptions, clearly conservative, have continued to be defended by other writers. Finally, we must remember that, in the first half of the nineteenth century, the organisation of the portuguese literary field also involves a gradual development of entertainment literature, very appreciated by a growing public of bourgeois readers.</p>
