Abstract. According to Aristotle, tragedy arouses and at the same time purifies the audience passions. Renaissance scholars and playwrights try to explain the paradox : how is it possible to restrain, moderate and purge the passions by rising them ? In the ideological context of Counter Reformation Europe, the emotions of the theatre seem morally reprehensible. It is therefore crucial to explain the catharsis : what is at stake in this debate is the legitimacy of theatre and of the emotions it arouses.
