Mercier turns the depiction of a utopian society relying on a precise observation of social and political mechanisms into a lonely dreamlike experience, a series of visions, of extreme and yet fading emotions. L’An 2440 is rightfully considered as the first uchronie, while our striking text has been mostly neglected by the academics, maybe due to its sheer fantasy : instead of a purely theoretical starting point characteristic of the utopia, it is the main character’s supernatural power which eventually drives the whole society towards Justice. Nevertheless this naive, not to say childish opening scene allows a wave of enthusiastic energy to be released, to pervade the whole utopian society and to be transmitted to the reader, until it’s exhausted into a disembodies voice.

Sintesi.
